Pumping and something isn’t right?

Flange size is hardly ever checked.
Most breast pumps come with a standard flange (often 24 mm) and it’s assumed to fit everyone. But every nipple is different, even each breast of the same person. With the right size, pumping should be comfortable and effective.

What is breast pump flange sizing?

It’s a one-to-one consultation where we measure your nipple and try different flange sizes during a real pumping session, to find the one that lets you pump without pain and effectively.

The flange (also called the breast shield) is the part that sits on your breast. If it’s too big or too small, the nipple can’t move properly in the tunnel: rubbing starts, pumping yields less and the breast may not empty fully.

How can you tell if the flange is your size?

What you see inside the tunnel while pumping tells you a lot.

Right sizeThe nipple moves freely in the tunnel without rubbing. Little or no areola is drawn in. No pain.
Too bigThe areola is drawn into the tunnel, swells and pumping yields less.
Too smallThe nipple rubs against the sides, gets sore and may come out white or misshapen.

Not hurting much doesn’t mean the size is right: many mothers get used to discomfort that could be avoided.

How does the sizing consultation work, step by step?

  1. We talk about your situation. How and how much you pump, which pump you use, what bothers you and what you want to achieve.
  2. We measure each nipple. Separately, because each breast may need a different size.
  3. We test during a real pumping session. We look at how the nipple moves, how much areola is drawn in, comfort and how the breast empties.
  4. We fine-tune your technique. Suction level, rhythm, duration, positioning, massage and compression.
  5. You leave with your size. A recommendation for each breast and the options that fit your pump (flange or insert), usually without having to change machines.

How do I know if my breast pump flange is the right size?

With the right size, the nipple moves freely in the tunnel without rubbing the sides, little or no areola is drawn in and pumping doesn’t hurt. Pain, rubbing, a nipple that looks white or misshapen after pumping, areola pulled into the tunnel or a breast that doesn’t soften are signs the size should be checked.

Can each breast need a different size?

Yes. It’s common for each nipple to have a different diameter, which is why each breast is measured and tested separately during the consultation.

Do I need to buy a new breast pump?

Usually not. In many cases it’s enough to change the flange or use an insert compatible with your model. In the consultation we tell you which options work with the pump you already have.

Does flange size change over time?

It can, especially in the first weeks and over the course of breastfeeding. If the pain comes back or pumping gets less effective, it’s worth checking again. The consultation includes one week of WhatsApp follow-up to fine-tune anything needed.

What does research say about flange size?

It’s still a young field. A 2025 pilot study in the Journal of Human Lactation found more comfort and more milk pumped with fitted flanges smaller than the standard size, while other studies haven’t seen clear differences in volume. What they share is the practical recommendation: fit the size individually, testing during a real pumping session.
